Music in the Round

Music in the Round was set up in 1984 by Peter Cropper, leader of the Lindsay string quartet. The Sheffield chamber music series was a bold and visionary festival, bringing world class chamber music to a city with a limited history of classical music concerts.

The title of Music in the Round first actually appeared in 1992 and the original May Festival soon grew into a year long series of concerts performed by musicians of the highest calibre. A touring programme visiting venues across England was established in 2003 extending the outreach of Music in the Round even further.

In 2005 the Lindsays retired, with their leader Peter Cropper remaining as artistic director of the new ensemble. The Ensemble 360 is a collection of young, extremely talented musicians who are dedicated to chamber music and South Yorkshire. As well as performing extensively and recording several C.D’s since they formed, they also undertake an extensive programme of education work developing and supporting young persons interest and involvement in classical music across the region.

Ruskins are also dedicated to live music of any genre and were keen to get involved and sponsor Music in the Round. Together we actively try and promote classical music in the area to show that it really is not just music by old people for old people. The ensemble has performed a mini concert at Ruskins and a classical jam night in an effort to bring classical music to people in an informal and relaxed atmosphere. We regularly hold student socials after the concerts and have recently held the press release for the May fest series of concerts.
